05:48 pm - Mentalist/Bond

In my ongoing quest to avoid doing dissertation work, I have watched series one of The Mentalist and have to say. It's bloody brilliant. But only if you like the smart-arsed, smug brilliance of Patrick Jane. Which I do. He's the kind of person who you would hate to be in an argument with, but watching him have an  argument with someone else is amazing.

Unfortunately Jane is not a happy bunny, as shown in the above picture. A serial killer called Red John murdered his wife and daughter after Jane declared Red John 'predtable' on some sort of TV show. Now Jan has left behind his old life of preteding to talk to the dead and read minds, and instead works for the CBI hypnotising and antagonising everyone. Okay, my summation of it sounds shocking but it is actually quite good, if you don't mind it becoming a tad predictable. In the last two episodes I'd worked out exactly what was happening before anything was revealed because you start to learn what to look for. Simon Baker who plays Jane is so adorable though that I could watch more or less anything with him in it, though sometimes you do end up shouting 'just punch him!' at the screen because he is being just too smug and know-it-all like. Check this show out people!

Also watched Casino Royale (and realised that my new housemate looks surprisingly like Daniel Craig! He's not as ridiculously out of proportion as Craig with his HUGE body and tiny, tiny head but the general look is there.)

I was horrified when they recast James Bond- Pierce Brosnan WAS Bond for me, but I'm glad they did and I think they chose the perfect guy for it. Many of my friends hate the new James Bond, they want the suave, martini drinking, not a hair out of place Bond that has been around for years but I like the grit and darkness of Bond with it still being quite entertaining and light hearted. And every time Q popped up with a pen that turned into a helicopter or some other equally stupidly implausible invention I felt like gauging my eyes out. I mean, a car that can turn invisible? Come on people! But not with new Bond, oh heaven's no. Bond gets hurt and has to clean blood off himself, Bond actually has conversations with people that aren't just a long string of bad puns and cliches and he gets tortured by bad guys. Now I know what you're all thinking- but Bond got tortured in Die Another Day! Well, okay, I'll admit he got a bit of a pummeling but he still looked it damn good shape afterwards. And the whole sequence was ruined by Madonna suddely appearing and getting tortured alongside. Fuck off Madonna. No, Bond got his bits smashed to pieces by a huge knot of rope wielded by Le Chiffe- a surprisingly good villian despite the asthma and bleedy eye. If you haven't seen it, then check it out, though if you're not a huge fan or poker and don't understand how to play it the sequences in the casino may become a tad tedious.

Ooo action shot! Bond kicking the shit out of someone. Nice.

Right, well, onward to the dissertation I suppose.

12:39 pm - *Interlude*
I'm back in Brum, a sure sign that it is time I updated my livejournal with all the exciting, exciting things that have taken place over my three month long summer holiday.

I'll start, as expected, from the beginning:

July- Went to Dublin for a week with two friend. Had swine flu. Cue me sat hunched over on the floor trying to work out what the hell was going on and unable to eat anything for three days. Felt better on the last day of the holiday, all ready to fly back into Merry Manchester. Joy. Started at the Playscheme, did a basic first aid course which was relatively interesting, then worked with the kids for three weeks. Got paid this year for it as well! Money immediately went to paying off my overdraft and rent for the summer, really not impressed with that.
August- Continued playscheme. Also started to learn how to drive which is pretty darn cool and my driving instructor (Rob) is brilliant, though he sometimes takes me far too seriously when I'm just teasing him. I tell him I'm going to go through gaps at high speeds that we won't fit through, to which he usually answers "don't you dare!" Much fun is had by all. Did theory test and passed first time with 49/50 on the question and 57/75 on hazard perception. I am indeed awesome. Had 20th birthday which I managed to stretch out over a week and a half, with one celebration in Brum and another in Manc. Can't really remember any of my presents, which kinda suggests there was nothing too exciting, apart from the Shakespearian insult magnets that my sister got me. 'She is spherical, like a globe. I could find out countries in her.' Got a letter from a publishing company who want to publish one of my poems in an anathology of promising poets that they're compiling. Much excitement ensued.
Sept- Left in complete solitude for first week while parents buggered off to Naples for 25th wedding anniversairy. Had enough food to sink a tanker and a very energetic dog to entertain. Did tons of work on my dissertation (finally), had a film night with friends, and had about three driving lessons. It was one of the best weeks this summer. Delightful solitude. Spent the rest of sept doing dissertation, reading for modules next year and driving. Test is booked for 2nd October and to prove my awesomeness to Rob he's told me to get no majors or minors. Had Kay's 21st which was pretty cool, and got my third piercing which is actually healing quite well at the minute and doesn't hurt unless I poke it. I poke it a lot.

So I boogied my way down to Brum yesterday and was greeted by a house full of junk and mould and smelt of smoke. It's like living with farmanimals sometimes. Animals that smoke and have far too much shit that won't fit in their rooms so they disperse it throughout the house. Spent yesterday sorting out my alarmingly large DVD collection and even more alarmingly large book collection so that they will actually fit into my room. true, I now have no spare surface in my room but at least they're all in there. Had scrambled egg on toast for tea :) and then caught up with house people. It wasn't a bad day all in all. Loving having my sound system back, I can annoy my housemates continuously from when I get up to when I go to bed by playing music with thumping basslines. Poetry.

06:49 pm - Friends and Strangers

Friends and Strangers

I cannot describe the people I meet,

As I wander down Silver Street,

From the old lady with her many bags,

To the businessman drawing on a fag.

Each has a life, a story to tell,

The clock strikes one, the toll of the bell,

And I continue on my meandering way,

Lamenting the already failing day.

I end up on the market, a familiar sight,

The many good people fuelling the good fight,

Fish mongers, meat sellers, pastries and pudding,

The frequent shout, “How much you wantin’ darlin’?”

The faces I see, strangers and friends,

Suffer no fools and follow no trends,

A most un-hip, lacklustre place,

But it doesn’t matter; I’ll explain my case.

The simplicity of a garden, with a train rumbling by,

Would make most of you shudder, and wonder why,

The tranquillity of such a scene appeals to me so,

Because it sets the heart at ease and lets the soul grow.

11:17 pm - Scratch

I spoke to a girl last night,

She said wasn’t it a delight,

That I had come visiting.

The scratch of a zipper.

It came down to blows,

With a jibe,

A parry,

A monumental indecision.

We decided to dance the night away,

With my hands, one on her back,

One on her hip,

Leading her round that floor.

Round and round we flew,

Faster and faster,

Until the ceiling came crashing down,

And we were left swimming in the rubble.

The red haze descended,

And I couldn’t concentrate for it,

Couldn’t find any remedy for it,

Scratching like the scratch of a zipper.

So now I wait in solitude,

Wishing I have never been with her,

But I cannot help but wonder,

If I may have made a terrible plunder.

With the scratch of a zipper.

11:01 pm - Untitled rampant self-indulgence

More poetry, probably influenced by my brain trying to escape out of my ears while writing essays :)

I walk the streets as the sun fails in the sky,

My companions are the sludge of humanity,

And the silent threat of an unspoken presence,

One I don’t dare acknowledge,

But I still tip my hat and rub shoulders as we walk.

The swings creak with the echoes of children’s laughter,

The roundabout with the thumping of tiny feet,

The tarmac with the tears and snuffles of scuffed knees,

Of summers long gone,

Of childhoods forgotten and idealised.

Grass squelching underfoot,

A flag shuddering under my feet,

A hidden reservoir of dirty water sloshing over my boots,

Soaking my feet.

Another street,

Another house,

Another life that is inconsequential to me.

Discontentment leaks out of every letterbox,

Every crack of every curtained window,

Like stale milk dripping down onto a fridge shelf,

Pooling, stagnating, festering.

The discontent of mundane lives.

The beautiful woman,

Who is just sinew and bone under her layered make-up,

The businessman of success; with a suitcase and tie,

The mask we all wear,

Stripped from us in judgement.

A photograph of a memory of a place,

A stain upon a piece of paper,

A companion, an accomplice?

Or not,

Just that unspoken presence,

Rubbing against my shoulder.

02:38 am - Random bit of Poetry

Random little thing I wrote, it seems a waste if no one actually gets to read it:

I am alive.

I am a live.

I am vile.

I am free.

I am cheap.

I am trapped.

I am lonely.

I am alone.

I am baloney.

I am afraid.

I am fear.

I am frightful.

I am vertical.

I am horizontal.

I am perpendicular.

I am paradoxical.

I am parasitic.

I am pathetic.

I am hate.

I am horror.

I am hedonism.

I am greed.

I am degrading.

I am gruesome.

I am illogical.

I am unequivocal.

I am inexplicable.

So why don’t I want to change?

05:44 pm - hmmm...
Yeh, so I haven't written recently and that's cos there's very little going on to be honest. Saw Judas Priest with Cat and they were awesome, got 4 essays and a presentation to do within the next two months or so, going fire spinning on monday, got a house party next friday, running out of money. And certain people are still idiots and certain people are being a bit creepy and certain people are still reasonably awesome.

Main achievement of the day: purging my itunes of many unwanted songs and rediscovering some bands I'd forgotten about.

Also started researching Masculinism, or men's liberationism, for my linguistics essay and hopefully it's not all for nothing and the tutors actually like my idea for the essay. Seeing as how they're all feminists, I doubt they will but boo sucks to them I suppose.

Decided that Being Human and Demons are indeed awful, and the only redeeming factor of Demons is the delectable Philip Glennister. But seeing as I have a poster of him as Gene Hunt, I don't need him as Rupert Stupid-American-Accent Galvin.

Finally watched Hot Fuzz and thought it was mediocre, Simon Pegg needs to buck his ideas up a tad. Watched the Brits on wed and played a very complicated, numerously ruled drinking game with some of my housemates. Hours of fun.

And... that's about it.

01:53 pm - MSN news

"In my formative years, it was drilled into me that I wanted to go 'to the toilet please'. But not this sprog. In the advert for Glade Touch n Fresh, the kid wants to do, and I quote, "a poo". But he doesn't want to do said poo at his house because his stupid thicko of a mother didn't buy a Glade Touch n Fresh for their loo. So he wants to do his poo at his friend Paul's house because they've got that Glade thing. And to think that when I was a kid, I wanted to go to my mate's house because they had a VCR."

12:28 am - *drum roll*

I have finally started writing again! Demons has, for some strange, inexplicable reason, given me quite a few plot ideas and tonight I actually sat down and wrote. Tis quite amazing. And there are other plot lines in the making which have nothing to do with Demons so even more to get excited about. On a bad note I have quite a bit of work to do, but on a good note I made a Philip Glenister as Rupert Galvin icon. Go me!

08:44 pm - Demons
Just tuned into the second episode of itv's Demons and felt the need to have a bit of a whinge...
Still can't decide whether it'sbad in a good way or just bad in a really really bad way. I love Philip Glenister, but his on and off yanky accent is so dodgy it's unbelievable, though didn't grate as much this episode as it did the last. He also has a few brilliant one liners going on.
Luke and Ruby are quite annoying and just seem generally two dimensional. Surprised me how few questions Luke asked in the first episode, he seemed to accept it all very quickly.
Mina is an odd character, the ability to see the past while holding objects yet is actually blind. Is it just me who watches her quite closely and notices that she looks at characters while talking to them etc? Odd.
Father Simeon is quite groovy, he's a zombie who has beef with Rupert Galvin. General comic relief.
The demons are alright, the fights are a bit pathetic and very short.
This week was definitely better than last week so hopefully it'll be even better next week as the characters develop at bit.

Anyway, in other news I've been back in bham about a week, done quite a bit of reading for the new term, though I can't actually find my timetable for the new term which starts tomorrow. Oops.

03:57 pm - Ho Ho Humbugs

Back home for xmas, and it's okay I suppose, not really been doing much. I got back on wed and since then I've been out for a meal and thats more or less it.

Have just cleared my room though and threw away a mental amount of stuff, and found a pile of 114 pokemon cards which I have no idea what to do with. But anyway...

First term at uni was fantastic, so much better than first year due to a mixture of better housemates, better location and me generally being a bit more sociable :) spent a lot of time at harry's and at Joes (student bar/coffee house thing), started fire spinning and writing for the paper, met loads more people who are really cool. All in all, not a bad start :D

Xmas day is nearly here and I'm all set, just a pity I more or less know what I'm getting. Going out for new year as well which should be interesting... wish I was back in bham earlier though, train back down is the 8th Jan, which is AGES away! Going Chester on wed with Cat and Charleen so thats something a bit exciting, and going out tomorrow for food with the fatties.

It was very very interesting to hear some of the things that some of my 'friends' had been saying about my uni life, one of my friends came down to visit and didn't get on with one of my very good friends down there. And I mean did NOT get on with. Anyway, hilarity ensued for me and the uni friend, friend from home wasn't impressed.

Epic!

03:04 pm - Films!
Just watched Tropical Thunder, Kung Fu Panda and Daywatch at Harry's. Jack Black seems to be getting less and less funny every time I see him, and I'm not sure why. Tropical Thunder was quite amusing, but because of Tom Cruise playing a fantastic director guy and Robert Downey Jr playing a white austrailian who has had skin pigments to turn black for the role. I missed half of Kung Fu Panda but the last part that I did see was quite dire, though Harry found it immensly amusing so maybe it was just me not getting it one bit. Daywatch, the sequel to Nightwatch, was okay but nowhere near as good as it's prequel, glad it's still in Russian and they haven't done a shitty dubbing.

Also, fire-poied for the first time on monday and it was immensly groovy even though I hit myself in the leg,

11:40 pm - Eagle Eye
Been to the cinema to see the new Shia LaBeouf movie- Eagle Eye. I was expected something that would explore the Big Brother society and how we are always on camera and can always be tracked by mobiles. Instead it was a mix between Die Hard and... I'm tempted to say The Matrix but that makes it sound really good. There's a bit of Bourne Ultimatium thrown in there as well. It's a good laugh but that's about it.

As the Northern hemisphere spins toward the shortest day of the year, it's getting dark earlier and earlier. What comforts do you fall back on when the days are short and the nights are long?

I rest safe in the knowledge that Christmas is on it's way and Birmingham will be lit up with Christmas lights and the German Christmas Fair will soon be open. Though the idea of walking down to uni in the dark on a night is a bit naff. Note to self : buy a coat.

01:39 pm - Armitage, Spooks and Hallowe'en

Just sat and watched Spooks with Katie, yes my reading week is going very productively thank you, and did a lot of drooling over Richard Armitage. He spoke Russian for crying out loud!
And according to the Times Online, http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/tv_and_radio/article5019442.ece he actually underwent torture for a more authentic look. It's being shown on the 3rd November, so thank god for iplayer.

On a less horrific note, Hallowe'en thingy tonight! A guy I know is going as the Joker dressed up as the nurse. It is going to be amazing.

05:42 pm - Writer's Block: Over-the-Top Metaphors

Detective stories are stereotypically full of over-the-top metaphors: "The villain's hand stroked the cat the way his sins stroked his black soul. His voice, rough as the city's nighttime streets and twice as terrifying, barked orders to his lackeys. They scattered like parents who just realized they forgot to pick up a child from school." Write a short scene using some of your own extreme metaphors and similes.

"She looked deep into his eyes and fell into them like a small child down a disused well, his arms moved to encircle her, the bronzed, defined muscles glistening in the sunlight like a newly made slug trail. She whimpered as his lips descended onto hers, kissing her like she was the last thing in the entire world with a pulse. He picked her up as though she weighed as much as a feather and placed her loving on the bed, ripping off his shirt like a bear on heat as he surveyed his prize. He leapt on top of her and rubbed his perfect body against hers like a dog does a fresh turd."

01:04 pm - I'm Back!

Back from Croatia and now back in B'ham, ready to commence with another year of fending for myself. Hopefully it will be a little bit more exciting than last year which was a true disappoint, mainly due to having shit flat mates (minus one), very unexciting people on my course (minus three or four) and my course being a pile of steaming horse manure.

I have an action plan for this year, join the student newspaper and maybe one or two other societies which will get me meeting people and hopefully inject some excitement into my otherwise bit shit exsistence. Also planning to catch up on the writing (all slash inspiration has fled from me, I've started a travel journal to write up about Croatia but fiction writing is going nowhere.)

Saw an old friend when I was back home who gave me a book, on one condition that I begin writing again immediately after finishing it. I haven't even started it yet due to unpacking from hol, packing for uni, stuff at church and I'm still reading my Slash autobiography which is fascinating.

Anyway, still not unpacked about 50% of my stuff, I've got bags littered all around my room, and I'm yet to find a phone point to plug my phone line into to. I suspect the house may not have any which is stupid in my opinion. And no one else was in the house last night (my first night here) which was quite eery as the house is quite big and creaks quite a lot. Though, on the plus side, I have red curtains and lampshade in my room and black sheets/duvet on my bed so I get a nice lighting effect at night. Also we have a monster tv, wii and various playstations. The DVD collection is currently looking pitiful but now I've arrived with my quite impressive collection it's looking quite good. Same with my many many many posters that are now dotted around the white, plain walls.

Yay for  new year!
